Japan is considering increasing academic scholarships to local students to promote human capital development in Zimbabwe.

Japanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Mr Toshiyuki Iwado on Tuesday paid a courtesy call to the Minister of State for Government Scholarships in the President's office, Dr Chris Mushowe on modalities to increase cooperation.

Speaking to the ZBC News after the meeting, Mr Iwado said Japan will increase scholarships to Zimbabwean students to increase productivity.

"We are working on that and once after everything is finalised we shall start the entire process," he said.

Minister Mushohwe said Zimbabwe is ready to increase cooperation with Japan.

"We are happy to be doing this and we anticipate for more ties with Japan in the future," he said.

Cooperation between Zimbabwe and Japan dates back to 1981 when the Asian nation started funding developmental programmes.
