Harare City Council has approved plans to sell 1000 herd of cattle to raise $3,5 million for capital projects meant to improve the state of its farms.
The cattle are being kept Crowborough, Ingwe and Pension farms on the outskirts of the capital.

The move to sell the cattle was adopted and approved by the council in December last year but council management failed to meet the deadlines that were set.ne.

Mabhena Moyo, acting director for water, told council's environmental committee that since the authority was granted at the end of last year the department could not meet the 2019 deadline hence the need to extend it to July 2020. The cattle would be sold in batches of three.

"The department has embarked on a programme to ensure that the cattle arevaccinated and prepared for the market and is now ready to sell the cattle hence if approval is granted would proceed and effect the sales without any further delays," Moyo said.

He said there were steers at council farms that were ready for the market.

Moyo, however, said pastures were deteriorating due to veld fires and power cuts were affecting irrigation activities, hence the need to sell the cattle as soon as possible.

Council will use the money for land improvements, replenishment of pastures and repairing of machinery.

One of the councillors r Stewart Mutizwa said the local authority owned more than 15 000 herd of cattle.
