Lazini Ncube a Harare magistrate yesterday deferred the trial of former Cabinet minister Ignatius Chombo until August 2 to allow the High Court to make a key decision on whether to drop charges against him in his ongoing corruption case.

The expelled Zanu-PF secretary for administration and Finance minister is facing a litany of graft-related allegations.

Chombo has also made a constitutional application seeking to have all the criminal proceedings against him permanently dropped. Chombo who is facing charges of fraud, criminal abuse of office and contravening the Prevention of Corruption Act is arguing that his constitutional rights were infringed when he was detained by alleged soldiers after being apprehended by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces during Operation Restore Legacy.
